Indonesian Plastic, Reconstructive & Cosmetic Surgery Credentials

What Patients Should Know Before Choosing a Surgeon or Surgical Facility in Bali

⚠️ Credentials, Licensing and Accreditation Are Different

When assessing plastic or cosmetic surgery in Indonesia, patients should verify three separate areas:

  • 👨‍⚕️ The surgeon’s specialist qualification and professional registration
  • 🪪 The surgeon’s legal authority to practise at the named facility
  • 🏥 The hospital or clinic’s licensing, accreditation and surgical capability

A hospital’s accreditation does not automatically establish that every doctor is qualified for every procedure. Likewise, a doctor’s specialist qualification does not automatically authorise them to perform every operation at every facility.

The procedure must fall within the doctor’s recognised competence and the clinical privileges granted by that particular hospital or clinic.

🎓 Recognised Plastic-Surgery Specialist Qualification

📌 Sp.BP-RE or Sp.BPRE

Dokter Spesialis Bedah Plastik Rekonstruksi dan Estetik

This is Indonesia’s formally recognised specialist qualification in:

  • Plastic surgery
  • Reconstructive surgery
  • Aesthetic or cosmetic surgery

The qualification is awarded after specialist medical education and supervised surgical training in areas such as:

  • Facial aesthetic and reconstructive surgery
  • Breast surgery and reconstruction
  • Body contouring
  • Burns and complex wound management
  • Scar revision
  • Craniofacial surgery
  • Hand and microsurgery
  • Congenital deformities
  • Trauma reconstruction
  • Aesthetic surgical procedures

Indonesian university specialist programmes formally award the title Sp.BP-RE, meaning Specialist in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.

📌 Subsp. … (K) — Consultant or Subspecialist

Some plastic surgeons hold an additional formally recognised consultant or subspecialist qualification, generally displayed after Sp.BP-RE, for example:

Sp.BP-RE, Subsp. … (K)

This indicates advanced training in a particular area of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Patients should ask the provider to explain:

  • The exact subspecialty represented by the letters
  • Where the qualification was awarded
  • Whether it is recorded within the doctor’s official professional credentials
  • Whether it relates directly to the proposed procedure

A consultant qualification can be valuable for complex cases, but it must still be matched to the treatment being performed.

🔍 “Cosmetic Surgeon” and “Aesthetic Doctor” Are Not Equivalent Titles

Terms such as:

  • Cosmetic surgeon
  • Aesthetic doctor
  • Aesthetic physician
  • Anti-ageing doctor
  • Cosmetic medicine practitioner

may describe the services a doctor provides, but these descriptions alone do not establish that the doctor is a recognised plastic-surgery specialist.

A course certificate, fellowship attendance certificate or training workshop is not equivalent to the Indonesian specialist qualification Sp.BP-RE.

General medical practitioners and doctors from other specialties may provide particular aesthetic treatments where those treatments fall within their documented competence, registration, training and clinical authority. However, patients should not assume that experience in injectables, lasers or non-surgical aesthetic medicine establishes competency to perform major cosmetic surgery.

For procedures marketed as plastic, reconstructive or aesthetic surgery, Sp.BP-RE is the clearest nationally recognised plastic-surgery specialist credential. Other recognised specialists may perform certain procedures within their own specialty, but their qualification and clinical privileges must specifically support that procedure.
